The music of Seth Avett (as part of The Avett Brothers) and the music of Jessica Lea Mayfield have both given me solace, contemplation, smiles, tears and singalong sessions. The music and lyrics of their own work is emotional, inspiring and thought-provoking.
But the artist who probably has touched me the deepest with his work is Elliott Smith. So when I found out that Avett and Mayfield had been collaborating on an album of Elliott Smith cover songs called “Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith” (released a week ago) and were about to play in Colorado, I was very excited.
Tonight, I’m going to that show in Boulder. So I thought, even though there hasn’t been an official video made for any of the songs, I’d share recordings of them covering two of my favorite Elliott Smith songs as a delayed Music Monday post on a Tuesday:
